Why Bed Prep Is What Actually Makes Mulch Work
Mulch that goes down over existing weeds doesn't prevent them — it just buries them temporarily, and most come right back through within a few weeks. The weed control and bed prep that happens before material goes down is what actually determines whether a fresh mulch job holds up for the season, not the mulch itself.
Depth matters too: roughly two to three inches is the standard most landscapers work to — thinner doesn't suppress weeds or hold moisture well, and piling it much deeper can actually suffocate plant roots or invite pests. One mistake we specifically avoid is mounding mulch up against tree trunks (sometimes called volcano mulching) — it looks tidy at first but traps moisture against the bark and can lead to rot over time. Fresh mulch also fades with sun and weather exposure over a season, which is normal and not a sign anything was done wrong — it's simply how the material ages outdoors.
