Why Base Preparation Determines Whether Hardscaping Lasts
Most patio and walkway failures — heaving, sinking, uneven settling — trace back to what's underneath the surface, not the pavers or stone itself. A properly built base means compacted granular material, a slope that actually drains water away from the structure, and edge restraints that keep the whole installation from shifting outward over time. Skipping or rushing this stage is why a driveway or patio installed by the lowest bidder often looks fine for a season or two and then starts failing.
