Fertilizing & Overseeding for a Thicker, Greener Lawn
A thicker, greener lawn doesn't happen from one bag of fertilizer — it comes from applications timed to how grass actually grows through the season, paired with overseeding wherever the lawn has gone thin or bare. Fertilizer feeds the grass that's already there; overseeding fills in the gaps fertilizer alone can't fix. We schedule applications around the growing season rather than a flat calendar date, and we'll tell you honestly if your lawn's condition calls for overseeding or if fertilizing on its own will do the job.
Call or text Maple Property Maintenance at (289) 688-3733 — open 7 AM–8 PM, every day.

Grass Seed Needs Real Soil Contact to Actually Grow
Grass seed that just sits on top of thatch or dead grass rarely germinates well — it needs real contact with soil, consistent moisture, and the right soil temperature to actually take root. That's part of why overseeding on its own, without addressing what's underneath it, often disappoints: the seed can't get where it needs to go. Pairing overseeding with aeration (or at least raking to expose soil) gives new seed a real chance instead of washing away or drying out on the surface.
Cool-season grasses — the kind most lawns in this climate are made of — germinate and establish best when soil temperatures are moderate, which is why spring and fall consistently outperform mid-summer for seeding. Fertilizer works on a similar seasonal logic: what a lawn needs to build root reserves in fall is different from what helps it green up in spring, which is why we time applications to the season rather than running the same product on a fixed calendar.

We recently used Maple Property Maintenance and had a great experience. Nathan cleaned up the side of our backyard, removed a lot of junk and garbage, and even went above and beyond by doing some extra work on the side that we really appreciated. He was hardworking, professional, and paid attention to detail. We're so happy with how everything turned out — the space looks so much cleaner and better now. Frequently Asked
How many fertilizer applications will my lawn need in a season?+
It depends on your lawn's current condition and what you're trying to achieve — we'll recommend a schedule during your free estimate rather than sell a fixed number of visits up front.
Should I combine fertilizing with core aeration?+
Often, yes — aerating right before fertilizing and overseeding helps those treatments reach the soil instead of sitting on top of it, but we'll advise based on your lawn specifically.
Why did my overseeding not take last time I tried it myself?+
The most common reason is seed sitting on top of thatch or compacted soil instead of making real contact with it — pairing overseeding with aeration or proper raking first makes a big difference to germination.
How much does fertilizing & seeding cost in Durham Region?+
Cost depends on property size, scope, and what's included — Maple Property Maintenance provides free estimates before booking, so you know the price before any work starts.
