No obligation. We usually respond same day.

Thatch is the layer of dead grass, roots, and organic debris that builds up between the soil and the green grass you see — a small amount is normal, but once it gets too thick it blocks water and nutrients from reaching the soil at all, even if you're watering and fertilizing correctly. Dethatching mechanically pulls that layer out so treatments that follow it, like fertilizing or overseeding, can actually reach the roots instead of sitting on top of dead material. Not every lawn needs this every year — we'll tell you honestly whether thatch buildup is actually a problem on your property before recommending it.

Call or text Maple Property Maintenance at (289) 688-3733 — open 7 AM–8 PM, every day.

What's Included

  • Mechanical dethatching to clear built-up organic material
  • Full cleanup and disposal of removed thatch
  • Lawn assessment to confirm dethatching is actually needed
  • Recommended follow-up (fertilizing/overseeding) where it will help most

Why a Little Thatch Is Normal — and When It Isn't

A common misconception is that grass clippings left on the lawn after mowing cause thatch — they don't. Thatch is made mostly of dead roots, stems, and crowns that haven't broken down yet, not clippings, which decompose quickly and actually return nutrients to the soil. Thatch builds up when the lawn produces organic material faster than soil microbes can break it down, which happens more with some aggressive spreading grass types than others, and gets worse in compacted soil.

A thin layer of thatch — under about half an inch — is actually normal and even helpful, since it cushions the lawn and holds some moisture. Problems start once it builds past that point and starts blocking water and nutrients instead of just sitting there, which is the line we're actually checking for during an assessment rather than assuming thicker is always worse.

We recently used Maple Property Maintenance and had a great experience. Nathan cleaned up the side of our backyard, removed a lot of junk and garbage, and even went above and beyond by doing some extra work on the side that we really appreciated. He was hardworking, professional, and paid attention to detail. We're so happy with how everything turned out — the space looks so much cleaner and better now. Highly recommend Nathan and Maple Property Maintenance for anyone looking for reliable and quality work!

Frequently Asked

How do I know if my lawn actually needs dethatching?+

A spongy feel underfoot, water pooling instead of soaking in, or a lawn that looks patchy despite regular watering are common signs — we can check thatch depth during a free estimate rather than guess from a description.

How often does a lawn need to be dethatched?+

Most lawns don't need it every year — it depends on grass type, soil, and how quickly thatch is building up, which is something we assess on-site rather than schedule automatically.

Does leaving grass clippings on the lawn cause thatch?+

No — that's a common misconception. Clippings decompose quickly and return nutrients to the soil. Thatch is made of dead roots and stems, not clippings.

How much does dethatching cost in Durham Region?+

Cost depends on property size, scope, and what's included — Maple Property Maintenance provides free estimates before booking, so you know the price before any work starts.

What areas do you serve?+

We serve Oshawa, Whitby, Courtice, Bowmanville, Ajax, Pickering, Brooklin, Port Perry, Clarington, and surrounding Durham Region communities when the job is a fit.

Your Property. Our Promise.
