Core Aeration to Open Up Compacted Soil
Compacted soil is one of the most common reasons a lawn stops responding to watering and fertilizing — foot traffic, clay-heavy soil, and just time all pack the ground down until water, air, and nutrients can't reach the roots anymore. Core aeration pulls small plugs of soil out of the lawn, physically relieving that compaction so everything you put down afterward — water, fertilizer, overseed — actually reaches where it needs to go. It's one of the highest-impact single services you can do for an established lawn, and it's most effective in spring or fall when grass is actively growing and can recover quickly.

What Aeration Actually Does Underground
Aeration works by physically pulling small plugs of soil and root mass out of the lawn, leaving temporary holes that let air, water, and fertilizer reach root systems that compacted soil was blocking. The plugs themselves are usually left on the surface — they look a little rough for a few days, but they break down naturally and return organic matter to the lawn rather than needing to be collected and hauled away.
New builds and properties with heavy clay soil tend to need aeration more than older, sandier lawns, since construction equipment and naturally dense clay both compact soil more severely than years of normal foot traffic alone. If a lawn was part of a new subdivision in the last few years, there's a good chance the soil underneath is more compacted than it looks from the surface.

We recently used Maple Property Maintenance and had a great experience. Nathan cleaned up the side of our backyard, removed a lot of junk and garbage, and even went above and beyond by doing some extra work on the side that we really appreciated. He was hardworking, professional, and paid attention to detail. We're so happy with how everything turned out — the space looks so much cleaner and better now. Highly recommend Nathan and Maple Property Maintenance for anyone looking for reliable and quality work!

Frequently Asked
How often should my lawn be aerated?+
Once a year is typical for most residential lawns, though heavier clay soil or high foot traffic can call for aerating more often — we can assess your property's soil and traffic during a free estimate.
Can aeration be done in the same visit as overseeding?+
Yes — aerating right before overseeding is one of the most effective combinations, since the holes left by aeration give grass seed direct contact with soil instead of sitting on top of thatch.
Do I need to rake up the soil plugs after aeration?+
No — the plugs are meant to be left on the lawn. They break down naturally within a couple of weeks and return organic matter to the soil rather than needing cleanup.
How much does core aeration cost in Durham Region?+
Cost depends on property size, scope, and what's included — Maple Property Maintenance provides free estimates before booking, so you know the price before any work starts.
What areas do you serve?+
We serve Oshawa, Whitby, Courtice, Bowmanville, Ajax, Pickering, Brooklin, Port Perry, Clarington, and surrounding Durham Region communities when the job is a fit.
